Welcome to the first weekly issue of the relaunched Pixelogic newsletter! Every Sunday I’ll send out playable links to this week’s featured nonogram puzzles: seven 15x15 puzzles, seven 20x20 puzzles, and one 25x25 puzzle.
After thinking it over some more since I announced the newsletter change, I decided it would be more fun to look forward by including the featured puzzles for this coming week, rather than listing the puzzles from last week. If you’re already a Pixelogic player, this gives you a sneak peek of the week’s upcoming puzzles.
Who invented nonograms? 💭
In the mid-1980s, Tetsuya Nishio, a professional Japanese puzzle maker, invented this logic puzzle which he called O’Ekaki (translates to “Paint by numbers”), which combined his love of art and puzzles. Coincidently, Non Ishida, a Japanese graphic designer, came up with the same idea, inspired by a competition he won to create a “picture” using the windows of a skyscraper by turning lights on and off inside a building. This is where the name Nonogram comes from.
So who is the true inventor of the puzzle? While Non was first to publish the game, Tetsuya helped further refine it by introducing constraints such as unique solvability. I would say both are equally responsible for the game as we know it today.
