Well, it’s been a crazy week.
Following our previous deep dive into how many well-formed, solvable 5x5 nonograms exist, I thought why not make a game where you can actually play through all ~25 million of them?
So I built one. It’s a realtime collaborative web game where every puzzle you solve is solved for everyone else too.
After a few days of hacking it together, I launched Every 5x5 Nonogram on Friday, and as of this writing, we’ve already solved nearly 2 million puzzles collectively!
Here are some helpful hints to get you started:
The puzzles are divided into 1,000 “sections”. Each section has 25,000 puzzles, except the last one. When you first visit the game, you’ll be put into a random section.
Do you see a colored border around a puzzle? That’s another player somewhere in the world. Watch out though, its possible someone can swoop in and complete a puzzle you’re working on before you finish it.
Having difficulty finding unsolved puzzles? Press the “right arrow” button at the top right and it will give you options to either jump to the next unsolved puzzle in your section, a random puzzle, or a specific puzzle by number
Play with your friends! Simply copy the URL in your browsers URL bar or press the ‘share’ button and send to someone you want to play with. With the shared URL, your friend will start out in the same spot as you.
Try it out yourself! How long do you think it’ll take before we complete all 24,976,511 of them.
